What is good potting soil for my plants?
Potting soil - the green gold for our plants. But how do you find the ideal soil that is suitable for our green plants? Similar to the variety of food in the supermarket, the market also offers a wide selection of soil. But what makes good potting soil?
The right ingredients
A good potting soil should be able to store water well and absorb it slowly to prevent overwatering. It must release nutrients slowly and be both light and well-aerated. A complex requirement profile that many "substrate raw materials" can meet. These include wood fiber, coconut fiber, bark mulch and much more. The exact composition varies depending on the desired properties of the soil.

The peat question
Peat is an organic sediment that forms in peatlands. The use of this sediment in potting soil is controversial. Peat offers ideal properties for horticulture, but its extraction can raise environmental concerns. While high-quality growing media are often peat-based, peat-free alternatives for hobby gardeners today are just as effective. Test different soils until you find the best one for you. We at Efeuria personally prefer peat-free potting soil.
The right soil for ivy
Ivy does not have great demands on the soil. Simple garden soil, which you can enrich with a little compost before planting, is sufficient. The substrate should be able to retain moisture well. Waterlogging must be avoided at all costs.

Why is peat mining a problem?
In Germany, moors are drained for peat extraction, which is ecologically questionable. But importing peat from countries without strict regulations is also problematic. In any case, the sustainable use of peat is important.
Characteristics of a good potting soil
For me, good potting soil is characterized by the following features:
- Natural, earthy scent when opening the bag
- Moist but not soaked
- Free from contaminants such as plastic
- Loose and well ventilated
- Does not swell much after watering
- Peat-free and without artificial fertilizers
When choosing your potting soil, you should consider these criteria to ensure that your plants receive the best possible care.
